The Department of Physics of the University of Crete offers the possibility of studies towards a Ph.D. degree in nearly all areas of modern physics.
In order to be considered for admission to the PhD program the following two requirements are necessary:
- A Bachelors degree (BSc) in Physics or a related science field.
- A Masters degree (MSc) in Physics or a related science field.
The requirement of a Masters degree can be waived for candidates with an exceptional undergraduate record.
If the Bachelors and/or Masters degrees were obtained from a University outside Greece they need to be approved by the Greek national academic recognition center, also known as DOATAP. In this case the formal date of commencement of the studies is the date of approval of the degrees by DOATAP. The recognition process is a lengthy one (and it require fees to be paid). Students who are interested in applying for enrolment for PhD studies in the Department of Physics must contact DOATAP as soon as possible.
You may wish to check whether the University awarded your degree is already in the list of "recognized" Institutions. If your Institution is included in this list, please contact pgrad@physics.uoc.gr.
All applicants should provide to the Graduate Secretary the following material:
- An application form with a statement in which the candidate briefly describe his/her research interests as well as the reasons to pursue a PhD at the Department of Physics
- The proposed title of the dissertation (in Greek and English), a summary of the dissertation, the proposed language in which the dissertation will be written and the proposed PhD supervisor
- A CV, copies of the undergraduate and MSc degrees, as well as (official) transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate courses
- At least two (2) letters of recommendation from members of the academic community which evaluate the candidate
- Scores of GRE Physics and TOEFL, if available
- Copies of English language titles or other equivalent certificates, if available
The Graduate Studies Committee reserves the right to request further information and/or an interview from the candidates.
A faculty meeting is typically required at which the committee evaluating the application is appointed and a subsequent meeting during which the committee presents the evaluation and the decision whether the application is accepted is taken. Given that there are typically 10 faculty meetings per year, it takes two months from the time of submission for the application to be evaluated.
Applications are accepted throughout the year. The formal date of commencement of the PhD studies is the date his/her application is approved by the Department assembly. The minimum duration of the studies is three (3) years, and 4 (four) years if the candidate does not have an MSc degree. The maximum duration of the PhD studies is 6 (six) and 7 (seven) years, respectively.
Applications to PhD studies of the Department of Physics are accepted throughout the year. For more information please contact the Graduate Program Secretary or a member of the Graduate Program Committee.
