Goal of the Course The course prepares the graduate students of the “Photonics and Nanoelectronics” program for the topic selection and for the research endeavor concerning their M.Sc. thesis. Students are informed about contemporary research directions in photonics and nanoelectronics, useful research techniques and general issues of research methodology and practice.
Syllabus The course has a seminar character. Under the guidance of the lecturers of the course, each student undertakes to investigate the bibliography of two research topics in photonics and nanoelectronics and present her/his study in the class. These topics can be related to the observation and analysis of physical phenomena and properties, their applications to devices, as well as the research techniques and methods used. Each topic of study focuses on the subject of a published research paper, but it is estimated that, on average, 5 additional papers or equivalent bibliographic sources will be needed in order to understand the subject. The students should also prepare and deliver summaries describing the key points of the two papers.
During the course, seminars could be given by members of the teaching staff wishing to present a proposed scientific area for a Master thesis work, as well as, seminars for acquiring specific skills, such as writing scientific articles and preparing scientific presentations.The attendance of lectures and seminars of the course is compulsory for all students.
Each postgraduate student is also expected to follow the activity of two research laboratories, one related to photonics and one related to nanoelectronics.
