Nikos Papanicolaou obtained his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (1970), and his PhD degree in Physics from New York University (1975). His academic genealogy tree is here.
He subsequently held research and faculty positions at the University of Paris (1975 - 76), the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1976 - 78), the University of California at Berkeley (1978 - 80), and Washington University, St. Louis (1980 - 90). He joined the faculty of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete as a professor in 1990. He was the Chairman of the Department of Physics from 2003 to 2007. He retired and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2014.
