Lefteris Economou obtained his Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens in 1963 and his PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from the Univ. of Chicago (USA) in 1969. His academic genealogy tree is available here.
He was Professor at the Univ. of Virginia, USA (1970-1981), as well as Professor and Chair of Theoretical Physics at the Univ. of Athens, Greece (1978-1981) before he joined the Univ. of Crete in 1981. Hecwas the Director General and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), from its creation, in 1983, until 2004.
