Goal of the Course The course is addressed to third and fourth year students who wish to expend their knowledge in topics of cosmology and extragalactic astrophysics. It is recommended that the students have successfully attended the courses Astrophysics I and II (Φ-230, Φ-331) as well as course on Modern Physics (ie Φ-202).
Syllabus Elements of the Universe: Mass, radiation, cosmological principle, the expansion of the universe. The Robsertson-Walker metric, expansion and redshift. The Friedmann equation and its solutions. Basic Cosmological parameters. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and its origin. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the formation of light elements. Measuring distances in the Universe and the accelerated expansion of the Universe. The standard model and open problems, inflation. Anisotropies of the CMB, baryonic oscillations and the origin of structures int he Universe.
