Goal of the Course

This is an introductory course which aims to provide a first introduction to recent developments in the field of Optoelectronics-Photonics. It covers a broad range of issues related to materials, devices and applications with emphasis on the principles of lasers and their applications in Biology, Medicine, Telecommunications, Environmental and Industrial research. The course is appropriate for 3rd or 4th year students of Departments of Chemistry and Materials Science and Technology.

Syllabus

1) Light sources: Thermal, LED, Plasma Sources, Lasers-Principles of operation and Technology, Laser types, Laser light modulation. 
2) Detectors: Thermal detectors, Photodiodes Photomultipliers, Channel Plates, CCD, Semiconductor detectors, imaging systems.
3) Displays: Photoluminescence, Plasma displays, Liquid Crystal Detectors (LCD), Organic LED (OLED).
4) Optical fibers and waveguides: Principles of operations, Bragg gratings and optical fiber sensor.
5) Applications in: Biology, Medicine, Industry, Telecommunications, Cultural Heritage.
