XANTHOPOULOS INTERNATIONAL AWARD
FOR RESEARCH
IN GRAVITATIONAL PHYSICS

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE

having taken into account the nominations for the award and
having deliberated opinions put forward by its members, confers the

1993 Xanthopoulos Award
on

Dr. GARY HOROWITZ

Professor of Physics at University of California at Santa Barbara

for his wide ranging contributions to the mathematical aspects of gravitational physics, in particular: i) his work on positive energy theorems in general relativity; ii) his influential ideas on global problems in general relativity such as cosmic censorship and topology change; and iii) his numerous contributions which have illuminated the global properties of space-time geometry in string theory. Professor Horowitz's papers on String Theory and related areas have played a seminal role in bridging the gap betweem general relativity and particle physics in recent years and enriched both fields.
